Over the last 18 months, Terrafarmer has been working with farmer Haig Hamilton, providing soil field services and consultancy advice for his 3,500-acre arable farm in East Lothian
In early February 2022, Terrafarmer visited client Haig Hamilton in East Lothian, together with Garry Young from the Thomas Sherriff John Deere dealership in Haddington, East Lothian, to see how his winter crops were looking.
The Terrafarmer team has provided soil conductivity surveys and soil sampling analysis for Haig’s farming business, as well as consultancy advice on variable seed rate drilling, with support from Garry and the Sherriff Haddington team for the variable rate technology on the farm machinery via the John Deere Operations Centre. (The Thomas Sherriff team also carried out much of the soil conductivity survey work for us at the farm.) It was a great opportunity for Craig and Garry to visit Haig, a mutual client, to see how the crops are looking.
Prescription variable rate drill plan
Using the soil conductivity survey data, we constructed a prescription variable rate drill plan (above) for Haig’s winter cereal drilling last autumn. Seeing the successful establishment results on the farm (below) was very satisfying indeed!
Successful establishment of winter wheat
After positive feedback from Haig for the previous years’ harvest, the team has started drafting variable rate fertiliser plans for this spring (below), which will consider the latest soil sampling data and yield budgets for this year’s cropping.
Variable rate fertiliser plan
Haig has been very pleased with the results of Terrafarmer’s soil analysis and consultancy services over the last 18 months, with support from Gary and the Thomas Sherriff Haddington team—a great example of a positive partnership for the benefit of a mutual client.
