‘Microbial’ or ‘Non-microbial’?

Biological stimulants can be categorised as either ‘microbial’ or ‘non-microbial’ and products are formulated to perform specific functions when applied to particular crops.

Non-microbial

Non-microbial biological stimulants include seaweed extracts, humic substances, phosphites and other inorganic salts, chitin (an abundant polysaccharide derived from crustaceans), anti-transpirants (such as abscicic acid and waxes), protein hydrolysates and amino acids, and products containing complex organic materials.

Microbial biological stimulants include a range of modern products comprising plant-growth-promoting bacteria and actinomycetes (Bacillus/Rhizobia spp.), non-pathogenic fungi (such as Trichoderma spp.), arbuscular mycrorrhizal fungi (that form a symbiotic relationship with plant roots), and protozoa and nematode worms.
